Course Focus and Learning Objectives

Every pet should receive an effective nutritional conversation on every visit. Having an effective nutritional conversation with the pet parent is vital to the success of nutritional management, especially when a diet change is recommended. Understanding the four core communication skills will strengthen and support this relationship. Practicing these four skills will make for a more effective communicator and improve pet parent’s receptiveness to recommendations, ultimately making for healthier pets.

Effective Nutritional Conversations with Pet Parents will help you learn how to guide a pet parent through the transition to a new food by taking a nutritional history, explaining the benefits of the new food, answering the pet parents’ questions, determining feeding amounts and discussing a transition. Follow up is imperative for success of a new food. Technicians can pay an integral role in helping pet parents successfully switch to a new food.

Upon completion reader should be able to:

  • discuss the 4 core communication skills
  • explain what an effective nutrition conversation addresses
  • outline the components of a pet parent guide to explain the need for a new food and how to transition the animal
  • explain how to help a pet parent through the transition
  • discuss how to follow-up with the pet parent to help ensure transition success
