Course Focus and Learning Objectives

Beyond De-Escalation - Connecting with Calmness utilizes the archive of a live presentation under the same name.

Talking with upset clients and stressed colleagues can feel like tiptoeing through a minefield. This presentation will help you learn how to be more effective and more relaxed when speaking with clients and colleagues who are experiencing strong emotions such as stress, frustration, anxiety, or anger. It reviews a theoretical framework for building trust and establishing rapport, and practice techniques to help others release their "emotional charge" to the point of being able to collaborate with you on solving the problem at hand, while strengthening your relationship.

After completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • discuss techniques that will help build a strong therapeutic alliance with clients
  • describe the steps for reducing emotional charge
  • explain the technique of paraphrasing in emotionally charged interactions
  • outline how to incorporate power-equating techniques to improve the effectiveness of advice-giving
