Course Focus and Learning Objectives

Obesity in Companion Animals: A Kaleidoscope View from Veterinary Technician Specialists is a self study course.

As with people, pets suffer from being overweight and obese. Increased body weight leading to obesity causes decreased quality of life and increased risk for comorbidities. Given the occurrence of obesity in our companion animal patients, primary care veterinary professionals are faced increasingly with having to manage obesity as an additional consideration when providing care. In this course veterinary professionals gain unique perspectives from veterinary technician specialists about their top concerns and considerations when providing care to an overweight or obese patient. Understanding others' unique perspectives can improve the overall care veterinary professionals provide for their patients.

Upon completion participants should be able to:

  • recognize overweight or obese companion dogs and cats using a 1-9 body condition scale
  • outline considerations when providing care to obese patients from common comorbidities contributing to obesity
  • discuss increased risks when performing procedures on obese patients
  • explain how to modify an overweight or obese patient's diet to meet their ideal weight needs
  • outline how to best support an overweight or obese patient’s mobility needs to improve and optimize their quality of life
