Course Focus and Learning Objectives

Controlled Drugs: Recordkeeping and Diversion Prevention in Veterinary Medicine is a self-study course.

All veterinary team members with access to controlled drugs must be aware of the DEA's expectations regarding controlled substance recordkeeping. The course provides examples of documentation methods for keeping track of controlled drugs. Why and how cycle counting should be incorporated and what to do when discrepancies are found are covered. It is heavy on examples regarding how to apply DEA regulations in practice. Preventing drug diversion requires vigilance, education, and clear policies. Both human and veterinary healthcare professionals play a crucial role in ensuring controlled substances are properly managed to protect patients, workers, and organizations. This course explores the issue of drug diversion in healthcare and veterinary settings, focusing on risks, prevention strategies, and response protocols.

At the end of the presentation attendees should be able to:

  • explain why controlled substance recordkeeping must be a priority for veterinary practices
  • list pros and cons of electronic and paper logs
  • describe how to audit controlled drug records to ensure information is accurate and complete
  • identify recordkeeping strategies that will fit your specific practice setting
  • summarize how to recognize in-hospital drug diversion
  • list the steps to take when you identify internal drug diversion occurring in practice
  • describe vet shopping and ways to identify it
