Course Focus and Learning Objectives

VetCE on Demand: Is That Veterinary Diet Really Too Expensive? Effective Cost Conversations utilizes the archive of a live presentation under the same name.

Cost conversations regarding veterinary diets, especially those used as part of treatment plans for medical conditions, are a mainstay of client interactions for veterinary professionals. A quick internet search provides a glimpse into the misinformation surrounding the cost of veterinary diets. Unfortunately, this type of misinformation can make conversations regarding cost more challenging for veterinary professionals and prior research in companion animal hospitals has revealed that cost conversations were uncommon during appointments. Like any conversation regarding the cost of veterinary services or products, customizing the conversation to the individual pet is critical, by focusing on the value to the pet. To facilitate the ease of cost conversations, veterinary teams can be trained to utilize existing resources to have cost conversations and to apply these learnings to common scenarios in small animal veterinary practice, including elimination diet trials and effective weight loss plans.

At the end of the course participants should be able to:

  • discuss the challenges faced by pet owners and veterinary teams when it comes to cost discussions
  • explain how to efficiently calculate the cost per day of a specific diet using existing tools.
  • utilize cost factors when discussing elimination diet trials and effective weight loss plans with pet owners
