Course Focus and Learning Objectives

Equine Lameness Exams is a self-study course.

There is a saying that no horse is 100% sound. This course looks at the reasons to perform a lameness exam, the components of a thorough exam, and how nerve blocks are used to localize lameness. It outlines imaging modalities and their related cost and time considerations. The course touches on team safely considerations. Although a referral may be needed for advanced diagnostics, preparing your clients for what to expect is crucial.

At the end of the presentation attendees should be able to:

  • identify reasons to perform an exam
  • compare and contrast the passive vs. active exam
  • discuss flexion tests, hoof testers, and the lameness locator
  • explain the diagnostic value of nerve/joint blocks and when sterile prep is required
  • compare and contrast imaging modalities
  • discuss the benefits of treatment options, including surgical procedures
  • outline team safety consideration
