Course Focus and Learning Objectives

Seizures and Brain Disease in Felines: Diagnosing Challenges is a self-study course.

Diagnosing the cause of seizures and other brain diseases in cats can be a challenge for the general practitioner. This course will explore the metabolic, toxic, and symptomatic causes of these conditions. In addition, it will review the testing options to aid the practitioner and medical team in reaching a diagnosis. Treatment options and prognosis will be briefly discussed.

At the end of the presentation attendees should be able to:

  • identify the parts of the brain where seizures originate
  • define the DAMNITT-V or VITAMIN-D acronyms
  • list differential diagnoses for seizures and common forebrain diseases based on age categories
  • develop a comprehensive history taking protocol
  • determine appropriate diagnostic testing for seizures
  • compare and contrast the diagnostic plan for brain disease by age
  • determine which metabolic causes of encephalopathy can be identified on a serum chemistry screen
  • identify causes of meningoencephalitis in cats
  • identify antibiotics recommended for meningoencephalitis in cats
  • outline the most common primary neoplasia in cats
  • list underlying causes of brain infarction
