Continuing Education Credits

Course meets the requirements for 1 RACE hours of continuing education credit for veterinary technicians and veterinarians in jurisdictions which recognize AAVSB's RACE approval. However, participants should be aware that some boards have limitations on the number of hours accepted in certain categories and/or restrictions on certain methods of delivery.

RACE Subject Category: Medical; Delivery Method: Non-interactive Distance; Program Number 901809.

VetMedTeam is also approved as a New York State sponsor of continuing education for veterinarians and veterinary technicians.

VetMedTeam is also approved as a Florida state sponsor of continuing education for veterinarians. The Florida Medical Board does not recognize technicians and therefore only addresses veterinarian CE requirements. However, techs in Florida are able to use VMT courses to meet CE requirements.

Course Focus and Learning Objectives

VetCE on Demand: Oral Assessment of the Dental Patient Under Anesthesia utilizes the archive of a live presentation under the same name.

The oral exam of veterinary patients under anesthesia entails a tooth-by-tooth evaluation. The team member must be familiar with the oral cavity's structures in order to perform an effective oral exam. The use of diagnostic instruments such as the periodontal probe to find periodontal pockets, gingival bleeding, and furcation involvement, along with the dental explorer to find pulp exposure and tooth resorption, are addressed. Also included is a basic dental charting technique which shows how the examination findings, combined with dental radiographs, are recorded on a dental chart that guides the clinician.

At the end of the course participants should be able to:

  • identify the anatomical structures of the oral cavity
  • establish a dental plan for the patient
  • recognize and record oral pathology during an examination under anesthesia

Participant Feedback

When asked what aspects of the course liked best some responses were:

...I especially like the "skills" section of the course (although would have been even more helpful had the dental chart been zoomed while filling out). Great slides and definitions.

...I appreciated the dental chart and the different ways of charting

...This lecture strengthened the importance of a COHAT to improve quality of care in my practice

...I loved taking this course, the fact that it was on demand was even better bc I could scroll back and watch parts again that I may have not fully understood. Thank you for creating another wonderful learning tool.
