Course Focus and Learning Objectives

VetCE on Demand: Intraoperative Fluid Therapy and the Hypotension Algorithm utilizes the archive of a live presentation under the same name.

Fluid administration in human and veterinary patients warrants constant re-evaluation. Fluid therapy is not benign. Determining the right amount and type are key to successful patient outcomes. We’ve been told to hold back on fluid rates and total doses administered perioperatively in the past 10 or so years. However, the pendulum may have swung a bit too much in the other direction. Fluid therapy must always be based on patient exam and evaluation. Ways to treat hypotension need to be discussed preoperatively to help avoid fluid overload.

At the end of the course participants should be able to:

  • differentiate between relative and absolute hypovolemia
  • discuss cardiac output and arterial blood pressure formulas
  • outline a hypotension algorithm
  • discuss how to prescribe goal-oriented, patient specific IV fluid protocols for patients undergoing anesthesia including indications for multi-modal anesthesia

Open Enrollment with Immediate Access and Individual Scheduling

Participant Feedback

When asked what aspects of the course liked best some responses were:

...Very practical.

...Great lecture with clear explanations

...This was super helpful! I feel like one of the most confusing things in anesthesia is what to do when a patient is hypotensive. I now have a plan and truly understand more about what is going on when patients are hypotensive.

...It was very informative. For someone who works at a specialty hospital with an anesthesiologist, this is very good information for GP.

...Overall I found the info very helpful in understanding the steps needed to provide the best possible anesthesia for my patients.
