Course Focus and Learning Objectives

VetCE on Demand: The Science of Medical Massage and Why It Belongs in Your Practice utilizes the archive of a live presentation under the same name.

In contrast to other forms of massage, medical massage focuses on problems related to a patient’s diagnosis and implements techniques to achieve specific outcomes. It complements conventional medical care by reducing stress, pain, and discomfort as well as facilitating the healing process through neuromodulation, myofascial relaxation, and improved circulation. Techniques draw from a variety of professions and philosophies, including osteopathic manual therapy. Clinical applications discussed in this presentation include approaches for post-surgical recovery, especially for orthopedic cases, as well as in critical care medicine, neurologic injury, geriatric care, palliative medicine, and more.

At the end of the course participants should be able to:

  • describe at least three mechanisms of action of medical massage
  • outline least three clinical applications of medical massage
  • list ways in which medical massage can improve patient comfort and quality of life
