Course Focus and Learning Objectives

VetCE on Demand: Talking to Clients About the Most Important Appointment, the Euthanasia utilizes the archive of a live presentation under the same name.

Euthanasias are one of the most difficult appointments seen in a veterinary hospital. It is emotional for the client and the doctors, as well as the rest of the team. Many team members are awkward and unable to convey empathy to the clients while they are making the appointment.

This course looks at commonly made mistakes in the scheduling, the handling, and the communication during a euthanasia appointment. It will explain how managers can train their team members on this difficult conversation. It includes tips to use and specific phrases for team members to say to owners during this difficult time.

At the end of the presentation attendees should be able to:

  • explain the most empathetic way to handle the euthanasia phone call
  • demonstrate how to build trust with clients
  • discuss different protocols for handling euthanasias when they come into the practice

Participant Feedback

When asked what aspects of the course liked best some responses were:

...I liked the fact the speaker gathered information from multiple different clinics to give examples of what to do and what not to do when interacting with a client about schedule a euthanasia appointment.

...It helped me reconsider the order in which I ask the client for the information needed for euthanasia exams. It also gave my insight in a few new ways to make the client and pet more comfortable that I had never thought of, like letting the client know they may want to bring something that is a favorite of the pet.

...I enjoyed how informational the video was with walking through the entir process, from phone call to discharge. There are many helpful tips that can be implemented in any practice.

...I specifically like the portions of the presentation that focused on over the phone communication. This is the first impression that clients get and it can be the difference between if they do or don't choose us for such an important moment in their pet's life.
