Course Focus and Learning Objectives

VetCE on Demand: The Physiology of Pain utilizes the archive of a live presentation under the same name.

Pain signals travel along a certain path on their way up to the brain. By understanding this pathway, we can treat pain more effectively by augmenting the pain signal within the nervous system. This course focuses on what pain is, how bodies react to painful stimuli, and what can be done to mitigate it.

Upon completion of this course the participant should be able to:

  • utilize pain terminology
  • outline the pathway of pain
  • discuss how the body tries to modulate pain signals
  • outline which drugs work at different points along the pain pathway
  • discuss how multi-modal analgesia works
