Course Overview

This open-enrollment, self-study course is based on the archive of a webinar presented on February 1, 2018, though the collaboration of VetMedTeam and Trupanion, with the growing support of concerned companies and organizations. The webinar was the 4th in a series of free webinars addressing compassion fatigue, burnout, ethics exhaustion, and decreased career satisfaction. Unaddressed the outcome is often career and life threatening.

One in six veterinarians considers suicide at some point in their career. Research shows that they have elevated rates of anxiety, alcohol abuse, depression and work stress. The debt to income ratio is out of control. Job turnover is high. In this lecture the presenters will ask the question: Is this career literally killing us?

As they explore the topic they discuss the underlying causes of this crisis and, more importantly, what to do about it? In this hour long lecture, board members of Not One More Vet, an online veterinary support group, talk about the common themes they see in their group as well as relevant literature. They will share their experiences as veterinarians and as support group leaders.

Along the way they will discuss action steps everyone can take to protect themselves and colleagues in the moment, as well steps that can be taken as as a profession to improve overall well-being.

The lecture also includes a step by step guide on how to help someone experiencing a mental health crisis. This is not just another lecture about compassion fatigue.

Please join Nicole McArthur, DVM and Carrie Jurney, DVM, DACVIM (Neuro), as we try to revive the soul of our great profession. And, share this opportunity with fellow members of the veterinary community.
