Course Focus and Learning Objectives |
VetCE on Demand: Pain Management for Chronic Disease utilizes the archive of a live presentation under the same name.
Chronic pain can be very difficult to control because the chronicity itself causes changes in the pain pathway that may not resolve with the use of common analgesics. Effective treatment of chronic pain often requires administration of both traditional and “nontraditional” analgesics along with nonpharmacologic techniques. The importance of the animal’s “team” (caregiver or owner, technician, veterinarian, etc.) in pain identification and management is stressed.
After completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- outline the signs of chronic pain and describe those signs to the pet caregiver
- discuss the myriad ways that chronic pain can negatively impact the patient
- explain the complexity of chronic pain and why it can be difficult to treat
- discuss the variety of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic analgesics for relief of chronic pain
