Course Focus and Learning Objectives

VetCE on Demand: Diagnosis and New Treatment Options for Cats with FIP utilizes the archive of a live presentation under the same name.

Diagnosing feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) can be straightforward in its effusive form but identifying dry FIP remains a clinical challenge. This course breaks down the key diagnostic tools and testing strategies available in practice to help practitioners confidently recognize all forms of FIP. It also explores the distinctions between feline enteric coronavirus (FECV) and feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV), the underlying pathogenesis, and the most common clinical signs to watch for. This course helps participants gain clarity and confidence in managing this complex and often misunderstood disease.

After completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • compare and contrast the sensitivity and specificity of different samples for diagnosis of FIP by RT-PCR
  • describe the differences between FECV and FIPV
  • outline the different diagnostic tests for FIP
