Course Focus and Learning Objectives

VetCE on Demand: Understanding and Managing Canine Separation Anxiety: From Diagnosis to Treatment utilizes the archive of a live presentation under the same name.

Separation anxiety is one of the most common and challenging behavioral issues seen in companion animals, significantly impacting canine welfare and the human-animal bond. This course offers an in-depth look at the prevalence, risk factors, and diagnosis of separation anxiety in dogs, along with evidence-based treatment strategies. A real-world case study demonstrates practical application in clinical practice.

After completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • discuss key risk factors associated with the development of separation anxiety in dogs, including socialization history and environmental influences
  • outline the diagnostic approach for separation anxiety, including behavior history, clinical observation, and differential diagnosis to rule out other anxiety-related disorders
  • list the components of an effective treatment plan for separation anxiety, including pharmacological therapy, behavior modification, and environmental enrichment
