Course Focus and Learning Objectives

Tis the Season…Keeping Pets Safe and Happy During Winter Holidays is a self study course.

Holidays are a wonderful time for families and include our pets as family members. Veterinary technicians often are the front-line responders to questions from pet parents on the best ways to keep pets safe during the holidays from such dangers as forbidden foods as well as environmental concerns that surround decorations and holiday plants. A good understanding of the various dangers that are posed by the various holidays, most notably in November and December can be important in conversations with owners who are concerned with keeping their pets safe.

After completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • recognize toxic plants that are associated with various holidays.
  • communicate the need for pet safety regarding toxic plants and foods associated with Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations.
  • recognize symptomology of possible toxic insult to dogs and cats.
  • outline the contraindications of administration of Activated Charcoal in emergency cases.
