What is the Approved Veterinary Assistant Designation?

Does VetMedTeam have their own NAVTA approved VA Program?
- Yes, VetMedTeam has had a NAVTA approved program since the inception of the AVA in 2011. To learn about our program please visit the VetMedTeam VA Program catalog pages.

I have completed an approved program. What happens now?

In order to take the examination, the graduate of any approved program needs an enrollment code.

Please do not contact NAVTA or VetMedTeam for the code as it will be provided through whichever program you attended. Graduates of the VetMedTeam VA Program will be provided the code directly from VetMedTeam.

The code must be used in the shopping cart to place an order for the AVA examination. Once used, a code cannot be used by another person.

Examination Proctor: Candidates sitting the exam are required to take the examination while in the same room with an examination proctor. Veterinarian or credentialed veterinary technicians (RVT, CVT, LVT) are approved proctors. In addition, a licensed testing facility may be used - such as a private company or a university. Candidates will be asked to provide the name and credentialing of the mentor when entering into the examination portal after payment and enrollment.

How long after graduation do I have to take the AVA exam?

Graduates of NAVTA approved VA programs have one year from date of graduation to make their 1st attempt at the AVA exam. As long as the first attempt is within the first year , follow-up tries may be made after the 1 year window.

NAVTA allows 5 attempts at the examination. Each attempt is $100.00.

Once an exam candidate submits payment for the exam, the exam must be taken within 30 days or that attempt is forfeited.

What happens after I pass the Approved Veterinary Assistant examination?

Upon achieving the minimum grade on the examinations, the participant will be immediately processed and able to access the documenting certificate. Information to identify the new AVA will be sent to NAVTA for record-keeping purposes.

How do I renew my AVA designation every 2 years?

This document, AVA Renewal Instructions, will provide AVAs with the information needed to maintain AVA status.

Tracking of personal expiration dates, and complying with renewal protocols, is the personal responsibility of the AVA. Neither VetMedTeam, nor NAVTA, is responsible for ensuring timely renewal.
