Course Focus and Learning Objectives

Avian Anesthesia: A Bird's Eye View is a self-study course.

Anesthetizing birds requires understanding their basic anatomy and physiology, including the ways they differ from mammals. It is important to be familiar with the anesthesia monitoring equipment that works with birds as well as machine and basic equipment set-up. Lastly, a well-rounded avian anesthesia protocol will incorporate the appropriate medications. This course will provide an overview of all these factors.

At the end of the presentation attendees should be able to:

  • outline the basics of avian anatomy and physiology and how it differs from mammals
  • discuss anesthetic monitoring equipment that works with avian patients
  • discuss general machine and equipment set-up
  • outline the selection considerations for medications in anesthetic protocols
