...The reading was very informative, some chapters more than others. For most of the chapters, I highlighted as I went, then went back and outlined and summarized. It was time-consuming but well worth it. The additional readings and information were very good, too. I've been in private practice for over 30 years and am starting a house call hospice and euthanasia practice (limited due to a non-competition covenant), and this course has been most informative. The modular approach was nice, and the Case Studies really helped to put it all together in a meaningful way.
...It was well balanced between the art (client interaction, dynamics, etc.) and science (pharmaceutics, specific physical actions..) of veterinary medicine. The background material generally was very useful and informative- I am sure I will reference it frequently as I transition some of our clinic practices. I did enjoy the exercise of doing the assignments and case studies and feedback challenges, interactions and comments from Dr. Jones. Kudos to her. .
...The case studies brought the course to life and made it more relevant - made you think far more than an exam. Legal aspects were boring but aspects I never gave any thought - so I guess rather important. Would be nice to discuss them more in actual course and come up with ways that did not seem so cold. Best part of course was getting overall view that there is really a great deal of help we can give our hospice patients - far more than just pain relief and euthanasia.
...The aspects I most enjoyed were learning the modifications to the home and the clinic in order to implement hospice/palliative care. Learning some of the drug recommendations for specific diseases where also very interesting. It was also beneficial to know how to incorporate other alternative therapies (laser, acupuncture etc) into this side of medicine.
...The support I received from the entire team. Due to some unforeseen events, I wasn't able to complete the course. The course end date was extended for me (I can't tell you how much that helped me out) and Keri was always supportive of my attempts. Even if it took me several tries to "get" to the point. Working with older animals (both in my career and my personal life), this gave me a broader view of hospice, palliative and end of life issues.
...The biggest benefit I think I received was learning specific techniques and/or drugs to use and when to use in palliative care. It's interesting that I have stopped using specific drugs in the past and this course has encouraged reconsideration of their use. The instructor was well informed and genuinely wanted to teach the subject matter. Thanks and well done!
...I really liked the fact that this course challenged me to steer temporarily away from the' cure all' techniques that I apply every day in veterinary practice, and allowed me a whole new outlook that involved non curative aspects and a genuine opening of my mind to the challenge of palliative care and the rights of these animals to the best of care possible for a meaningful future, even though that future time may be limited.
I really enjoyed pain control section , and the cognitive dysfunction section
...I enjoyed the case studies and feedback, although I would have struggled less if more information about history and physical exam were given. I learned some things that I will be able to put into improving my practice of medicine right away. The reminders of the remaining:ourselves time was very helpful as well.
