INTRODUCTION TO EMERGENCY RESPONSE

 

 

Course Description


An Introduction to Emergency Response is the first course in a series under development designed to educate veterinary staff members on emergency procedures. This is a two week course. Some of the topics covered in this introductory course are: appropriate questions to ask of the client; first aid instructions for the client prior to transport to the hospital; five methods of patient assessment upon arrival to the hospital and care of the pet owner.

 

Learning Objectives


Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
  • Ask the appropriate questions of the client regarding an emergency
  • Give basic first aid instructions to the client prior to transport to the hospital
  • Relay pertinent information to the veterinary staff regarding the incoming emergency
  • Develop protocols on handling the distressed client
  • Understand and describe the 5 patient assessments used to determine the patient's emergency state of being
  • Know the meaning of the ABC's of CPR
  • Help develop a hospital emergency protocol for staff members

Course Completion Requirements


Upon fulfillment of all requirements, the student will receive a VetMedTeam, RACE documenting, certificate of completion. Students must:
  • attain a score of 80% or higher on the course examination
  • complete the required posts to the discussion boards
  • complete the required assignments to the discussion boards
  • complete the course exit survey


The assignments in this course are primarily case based, using the student's experience and the practice's resources to fulfill.

This course is appropriate for all practice team members seeking to improve their understanding of the basics of emergency response

 

Continuing Education Credits

Course meets the requirements for 5 RACE hours of continuing education credit for veterinary technicians in jurisdictions which recognize AAVSB's RACE approval. However, participants should be aware that some boards have limitations on the number of hours accepted in certain categories and/or restrictions on certain methods of delivery.
