    Course Description

    Basic Principles of Emergency Response has been updated and improved. It has been lengthened from 2 weeks to 5 weeks and contains both new and updated information.

    The focus of this course is to provide veterinary team members with a strong foundation in the basics of veterinary emergency medicine. It is designed to educate veterinary staff members on common emergency presentations and basic emergency procedures.

    The assignments for this course require the use of practice/hospital resources for completion. Students must have prior work experience or are presently employed in a veterinary practice in order to complete the assignments.


    Learning Objectives

    Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
    • Ask clients the appropriate questions regarding an emergency situation
    • Provide the client with basic first aid instructions prior to transport to the practice
    • Develop procols to assist the distressed pet owner
    • Relay pertinent information to the veterinary staff regarding the incoming emergency
    • Understand and describe the 5 patient assessments used to determine the patient's emergency state of being
    • Know the meaning of the ABCs of CPR
    • Help develop a prac tice emergency protocol for team members
    • Understand commeoon emergency scenarios and demonstrate general klnowledge of routine emergency care
    • REcognize the 5 different types of shock and identify the 3 stages of shock
    • Learn the ABCs of CPR/CPCR focusing on patient recognition, assessment, and teh therapeutics involved with resusitation
    • Discuss common emergencies pertaining to the cardiac, respiratory, and urogenital systems


    Course Content
    Topics covered in this basic course include the types and stages of shock; CPCR; and common emergencies including those affecting specific body systems, seizures, and toxicosis. It also addresses electrocardiogram basics, emergency drugs including a chart with usage, fluid types and appropriate usage and monitoring,cardiac conduction, and the heimlich maneuver.

    Course Completion Requirements

    Upon fulfillment of all requirements, the student will receive a VetMedTeam, RACE documenting, certificate of completion. Students must:

    Kimm has fifteen years of experience in the veterinary field. She is currently a nursing supervisor at a progressive animal hospital in Scottsdale, Arizona. She also participates in public speaking as well as online education through vetmedteam.

    Kimm has worked in general, emergency and specialty hospitals and has achieved advanced certification in the areas of Emergency & Critical Care and Small Animal Internal Medicine. She is an active member of several veterinary organizations, including the Veterinary Health Care Team of Arizona (VHCTAz),the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America ( NAVTA), the Academy of Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Technicians (AVECCT), and the Academy of Internal Medicine for Veterinary Technicians (AIMVT) where she serves as the 2008 president.

    Kimm’s special interests include nursing care (intensive care/post-operative recovery), cardiology, hematological disorders and transfusion medicine. She has a passion for promoting universal recognition of veterinary technicians as dedicated professionals who provide excellent care, demonstrate advanced skills, and play an essential role as members of the veterinary team.
