Course Description

This course runs continuously - students may register at any time. The VetMedTeam Veterinary Assistant Program - Experiential Learner has been designed for those members of the practice team that already have experience as a veterinary assistant (working for all that time at a veterinary practice caring for client owned animals) for 5 or more years within the past 8 years. Candidates must have worked a minimum of 20 hours a week. In addition, this fast-track option is available to those who have completed one year of formal education in an AVMA accredited veterinary technology program. The program runs for 8 weeks and is directly supervised and instructed by the VetMedTeam CE Director. Those interested must be approved by VetMedTeam prior to beginning the Program. The VetMedTeam Veterinary Assistant Program - Experiential Learner curriculum is a series of eight modules covering veterinary technician assistant training information. Program articulates to select veterinary technology programs. Program has been approved by the NAVTA (National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America) education committee for assistant training...one of only two such approved programs. This fast-track option is directly supervised and instructed by a credentialed veterinary technician. An excellent way for experienced assistants to obtain formal documentation of their knowledge and skills. Superior content value to course fee ratio as this option is offered at a reduced rate compared to the VetMedTeam Veterinary Assistant Training Program. Employment Requirement: Students are required (no exceptions) to be employed a minimum of 20 hours per week actively as an assistant. The prospective student must perform the work of a veterinary assistant in a practice which provides full medical care to clients with privately owned animals. Shadowing, volunteering, or working as a receptionist or a kennel assistant will not provide the needed hands-on experience required to complete the course. Those employed in animal shelters, spay/neuter clinics, or volunteering at either, do not fall within the guidelines.

The VetMedTeam Veterinary Assistant Program - Experiential Learner covers Communications/Client Relations, Office/Hospital Procedures, Animal Nursing, Exam Room Procedures, Surgical Prep and Assisting, Laboratory Procedures, Radiology, and Pharmacology.

Course Completion Requirements

The VetMedTeam Veterinary Assistant Program - Experiential Learner contains a practical component - the 8 skills check lists. A mentor agreement must be completed by a practice veterinarian or credentialed technician, and submitted to VetMedTeam after program enrollment. The practice mentor(s) will work with the student towards completion of the skills lists. Students are required to complete a skills checklist for each module and receive a minimum grade of 80% on each of the 8 examinations in order to complete the program successfully. This fast-track option is designed to be completed in eight weeks.

Course Instructor

Pat Telschow, BS, LVT Pat started her career in veterinary medicine in 1990 as a receptionist for a small animal practice. Through the encouragement of a veterinarian, she pursued her associate's degree in veterinary science technology at Suffolk County Community College and graduated with high honors in 1995. Pat worked for many years for the Miller Place Animal Hospital on Long Island, NY as a licensed veterinary technician and truly enjoys the “team” environment. She also has a B.S. in Education from Adelphi University. Pat has been a VetMedTeamer since its inception in 1999. She has enjoyed working in various positions with the staff and members of VetMedTeam. Her employment started with welcoming new members in 2000 to working her way up to CE Director in 2003. Pat has decided to slow down her work schedule in 2009, but will still be on staff in the background developing and updating courses as a CE Assistant and as the Program Facilitator for the VetMedTeam Veterinary Assistant Program. Pat has been married to her husband, Glenn, for more than 35 years. They have 2 adult children, Kristian and Meredith. Kristian and his wife have blessed them with 2 perfect grandsons. Meredith shares her mother’s passion for veterinary medicine and is also an LVT. Pat and Glenn’s “empty nest” is filled with 3 kitties, a red slider turtle, a beautiful English Pointer, Willow, and the little clown (Pekingese/Shih Tzu/Chihuahua mix), Luci.
