CSI: PHOEBE THE DIABETIC CAT

Course Overview

Phoebe has a sudden onset of illness and as the history and medical clues unfold, the case presents medical treatment options as well as technical procedures that can be applied in any veterinary practice. As the student progresses through the course, critical thinking questions will be asked. An explanation of the correct or incorrect answer choice is presented to lead the participant into a deeper understanding of Phoebe's condition and treatment.

CSI: Phoebe the Diabetic Cat is a Case Study Investigation that leads the participant from Phoebe's hospital admission to treatment, discharge and follow-up. The goal of this case study is to bring awareness to the treatment of a diabetic patient in crisis while discovering there can be underlying conditions contributing to the medical emergency.

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify abnormal feline glucose values
  • Recognize the potential for underlying infections in addition to glucose abnormalities
  • Explain the reasons for using a dextrose drip in the treatment of a diabetic cat
  • Define fructosamine testing and why it is used
  • Discuss the importance of using a central venous catheter
  • provide wound management
  • Demonstrate the steps for glucose testing from a central venous catheter
  • Recall the process of slowly increasing insulin dosage after removal of a dextrose drip
  • Restate the importance of follow-up testing and treatment

Course Completion Requirements

Participant Feedback

...I liked the presentation of information in the form of a power point clinical case and that questions were provided to highlight the most important information. I liked that it instructed how to get an accurate sample from the central venous catheter..

...I liked learning about managing a complicated diabetes case.

...protocol for weaning off dextrose and reintroducing insulin to hypoglycemic crisis evaluation of glucose curves...

...I am the Lead receptionist at the clinic. I like to educate myself on illnesses and treatments...when clients call to check up on their patients.

...Reviewing the jugular cath/or long medial saphenous cath. Feeling like I was actually treating a case that could show up at any time. It reinforces something I always try to do- look at all the results AND the history, and it's often not just one diagnosis. I do minimum databases as often as the client will allow-without two very important values-spec. grav and rods/bacteria in urine, I can see how the telescope comes out and Phoebe bounces back in 48 hours because she was treated for one problem. This was engaging, well written, and took just under one hour. I enjoyed it & felt rewarded when I found my brain on the right track. It was truly presented like an emergency does-limited history initially, keep patient ALIVE, then get the rest of your information. Excellent case/format, etc.

...I liked that it related directly to my role as a technician and clarified what checking a Fructosamine level was all about and how it relates to many of the patients that I handle. I also appreciated the signs and symptoms mentioned to refresh my memory of how to diagnose or assess patients with these signs. It gave a fabulous start to finish!

...that it took the at-home monitoring into consideration - often a challenge with cats!

...Like information on fructosamine levels and importance of urine culture and rechecks.

...Good review of possible complications with diabetes and treatment, including owner cooperation/education and secondary infections.

...Reviewing use of a dextrose CRI was beneficial and how to restart insulin was also beneficial.

...Placing a catheter in the jugular or medial saphenous is something that isn't typically done on cats, so it was interesting to find that this is something that would be done for this situation.

...I liked the mock-up of the lab and culture results. It gave good information on what normal & abnormal values look like.

...I enjoyed the fact that this is a Problem Based Learning course, which I find to be very interesting, rather than traditional learning methods.
