CSI: BILLY AND THE TOXIC ENCOUNTER

Course Overview

Billy and his owners are out for a walk on the Colorado plains. Out of the blue Billy yelps and jumps back.

As the history and medical clues unfold, the author discusses a diagnosis and medical treatment plan that can be applied in every veterinary practice. As the participant progresses through the course, critical thinking examination questions will be asked. Depending on the answer chosen, an explanation of the correct or incorrect answer choice is presented to bring the participant into a deeper understanding of Billy’s condition and treatment.

CSI: Billy and the Toxic Encounter is a progressive case study investigation that leads the participant from Billy's initial presentation to treatment and successful case management. The goal is to bring awareness to the identification and treatment of envenomation, especially when management is difficult.

Participant Feedback

...It's great. Brandy is awesome. She is really knowledgeable and a great person!

...I liked this course because I don't recall learning how to treat envenomation in vet school, and the area where I plan to practice does have rattlesnakes!

...interesting because we don't have snakes where we lived, but if i travelled with my pet to places that did, I would know better what to do and expect

...The course explained everything from initial problem to discharge.

...description of laboratory findings consistent with rattlesnake envenomation...

...I liked this course because I don't recall learning how to treat envenomation in vet school, and the area where I plan to practice does have rattlesnakes!

...Learned about the link of rattlesnake envenomation and echinocytosis ...

...This was a really interesting course. I've only seen a couple of snake bite patients at my clinic and I have not had personal experience working with them. So being able to understand the signs and treatment of these patients is very beneficial to me, especially since I live in a place where this is not an uncommon thing to see.

...Great presentation and use of visual aids. All objectives were covered and the practice questions were very helpful to explain the concepts better.

...Being from Massachusetts; my clinic has never seen a case like this so it was very interesting.

...I liked how it allowed you to explore all the options and given detailed explanations to why an answer was better than another answer. The pacing simulated how an actual case would be performed, instead of throwing all the information at you. It was also fun!

...the explanations as to why or why not certain medications or treatments were effective.

...Great case; we have a critical care specialists and lots of rattlesnake bites in CO and suggestions were right on!

...I absolutely loved the fact that this was presented to me as if it was my patient and gave me the opportunity to proceed with treatment all while explaining just how my treatment will or will not effect the patient. I LOVED THIS COURSE!

...The blood manual differential info was interesting.
